Culture diversity is an important characteristic of the world we live in. Having an identity has so much importance that it is a theme seen throughout the entire world. When people lose their culture they lose themselves. So much of writing and movies these days center on dystopian societies that have all been forced into the same location with their culture destroyed. For example, the Hunger Games is extremely popular, but what isn’t immediately noticeable is that the society in which it takes place is dystopian for the very reason that their cultures are being squashed by a corrupt government. They are discouraged from expressing their uniqueness and while it makes for a good book and a hit movie franchise it is also a cautionary tale of the importance of having an identity. What people don’t often realize is that although it seems far-fetched, these dystopian societies are the direction in which the world is headed. With the changing landscape people everywhere are being forced into the same environment. Environmental hazards are altering the landscape and creating an all but uniform environment where there is no room for diversity.
In order to prevent cultures from dying out due to this destruction of natural habitats there must be a way to stop the threats to biodiversity. The role of government is to act in the people’s best interest. The role of government is not to keep everybody happy, it is to keep them from being threatened, and to make decisions for the greater good. People argue against government involvement because they don’t want to ever be in a position where they are controlled by somebody else, but that ship has sailed. People are controlled by their environment. The government has a duty to protect the wellbeing of the people, and the wellbeing of the people is interconnected with the world that we all live in and rely on. In order to survive and thrive the planet must be protected from threats to biodiversity. The Government should get involved in environmental threats because environmental threats are a threat to us all. Without different habitats our individual cultural identities dissolve and without a way of life there is nothing to stop us from falling into the dystopian societies that would be our undoing.
